Glenn Manders is one big happy coincidence. We met the Brisbane comic artist by pure chance on the Beautiful Losers forum. He'd uploaded some saucy little comics for the world to peruse and the world (...or maybe just us) loved what they saw. His comic Bad Teeth features the exploits of a rather cheery couple of friends that speak as if they're recovering from a hangover by pepping up on sugar drinks and doughnuts. It’s part nihilist, part rudimentary, part nostalgic all hilarious comic strip joy and we love it. We love it so much we're trying to organise with him to ship them to Adelaide but in the meantime we caught up with him to just shoot the breeze and discuss world-wide conspiracies.
You’re a handsome devil Glenn, how old are you?
25 in 2008
Hoo boy, aren’t you s’posed to grow out of comics (obviously this is sarcastic)? What do you reckon about comics? Are they art or more pastime?
Definitely art, they combine elements of storytelling, music, illustration and typography. But there are tonnes of people who use comics as a way to pass time, instead of watching TV, they will buy up a hundred dollars worth of comics every week to keep themselves occupied at home.
How did Bad Teeth originate?
I had been working with some friends on a comic book series called Phatsville since 2002, but I had a hard time scheduling my time based around other people so i fell out of it in early 2004. After a year of not really producing anything, I got the urge to print my own book.. so I came up with the title Bad Teeth, which later turned into an artist name for exhibitions + projects.
What is ‘Bad Teeth’ a reference to?
I haven't been to the dentist in a long time, so it's almost a reminder to look after my teeth.
How long does it take you to put this zine together?
It varies.. Some issues have had interviews, so it can take a few weeks of hassling people through email to get the content together. The latest book had maybe 30 pages of new comics in there, and it would take 1 or 2 days to complete each page, so that one ended up taking a couple of months to wrap up once things started to move. There’s always a period of no-activity after each book is printed, and then things start to build up again.
What’s your favourite thing about making Bad Teeth?
Getting a few months worth of material together and laying out the book.. I don't get much sleep on the night before I send it off to the printers, it's like being a little kid on Christmas Eve. Super-exciting times!
What are your influences, who/what inspires you?
Right now, there's always a Simpsons dvd on in the background while i'm drawing. Chad VanGaalen has just released a new album, so I am listening to that quite a bit, definitely look him up if you haven't heard the name before! He builds his own instruments, animates his own music videos and performs as a one man band from time to time.. pretty much the ultimate artist.
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?Probably somewhere in Canada.. I was going to say America, but I wait and see who becomes President in a couple of months before making any decisions about that place. Canada right now seems like a pretty relaxed place, full of creative people, and still has all of the delicious candy + breakfast cereals that come out of the USA.
What’s going on in Brisbane at the moment?
The Krispy Kremes just opened here a little while ago.. finally!! They are pretty good, but nothing will beat Dunkin Donuts' short-lived attempt at surviving in Australia.. I don't get why they failed, best donuts in the universe.
What’s your five year plan?
Don't die!! Find a way to expose Global Warming as a money-making hoax! And make more art books of course!
