I’ve never seen an indie band so incorrectly labelled. The very premise of indie music is that it is limited, secret – unknown even. But Canadian four-piece Metric have already beaten Kings of Leon to the number one spot in the Canadian charts, with their newly released single ‘Help I’m Alive’. Of course labels and genres are irrelevant to the quality of the music, and especially so in this case. Whatever the genre may be, singer Emily Haines’s voice suits it perfectly. She sounds like the sum of Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Katy Steele of Little Birdy. Luckily Haines’s voice keeps the listener interested during the album’s two or three more boring tracks. The frantic guitar and drums of songs like ‘Gold Guns & Girls’ and ‘Satellite Mind’ make you feel like you’re going crazy, but in a good way. ‘Help I’m Alive’ in particular, with its Killers-esque guitar and whiny synth, is a catchy one – it’s no wonder it kicked Kings of Leon out of the top spot in Canada.
Despite similarities to other ‘indie’ bands, Metric’s Fantasies is a winner, possibly even too good for them to stick to their indie moniker.
