There’s something about the organised clutter of the Gold Coast's cutest, greenest, second-hand bookshop that makes you want to go exploring. Any nooks or crannies not crammed with second-hand novels, non-fiction, records or DVDs are adorned with random toys and memorabilia. They’re not for sale, but nothing beats being watched by a thousand tiny eyes as you scan the shelves or chill with a coffee made in-house by owner Wendy Doherty.
Where do you source your stock?
All sorts of places, there's always people bringing a lot of books in, and I also pick them up from garage sales. I’m constantly on the lookout.
What if someone is looking for something in particular?
All our books in store are catalogued, so I can find books easily. I can also track down titles through our database and order them in, I do that quite regularly.
Every time I buy a new book it pushes an old one off my shelf. Any suggestions?
Well, we give store credit for bringing in second-hand books; we also have an exchange scheme where if you buy books from us and bring them back when you finish reading them, you’ll get a forty-five percent credit to spend on your next purchase.
What's the oldest or strangest thing you have in store?
We have children's books from 1938 and signed copies of books that are worth a bit. More unusual would be things like full sets of nautical books covering latitudes and longitudes, there's some very specific books that only appeal to those interested in a particular field.
