It's not the manliest stuff in the world, in fact it's straight out cute but the jewellery designs featured on Jeni Oye's website, Oye Modern, have captured our eyes, hearts and minds with their irreverent playfulness and personality that is too often missing from mainstream jewellery designs. The pick of the litter has to be the tiny household earring designs of Victoria Mason, which look like they'd make even the most non-existent of ear lobes humongous (by the way does any one really trust people with no lobes? - just a thought). So we caught a hold of Jeni to have a chat about Oye Modern... just coz.
How long have you been operating Oye Modern?
Oye Modern is almost one year old, we launched in November 2007.
What’s the premise of the business – do you have an ultimate goal, something to promote?
We love good design and beautiful things, especially unique, handmade items that you don't come by elsewhere. And all the good stuff is made by emerging and indepedent designers, who we are really proud to support by offering them a medium to sell their work.
What inspires you in this world – what stops you from worrying?
Good design and wonderful people inspire me. And beautiful Sydney Spring days help too.
What’s your favourite piece of clothing – do you wear it all the time or save it for special occasions?
My current favourite piece of clothing are my shoes, my Converse Reds by Camilla Engman, they have little birds and trees on them - they're very cute. I wear them every day.
Is the glass half full?
Most of the time the glass is half full, except when it's half empty.
What’s the most important thing to remember in business?
The most important thing to remember in business is to enjoy what you do, otherwise it's not worth it.
Have you ever said “don’t do anything I wouldn’t do” to someone? Where and in what scenario did you think it applied?
I'm sure I've said it, but I don't remember to who or where or when. I'm sure it would have been to a friend when they were about to do something a little crazy.
Have you ever done something you wouldn’t normally do?
I just gave birth to twins (no kidding)!
How important is taking risks in business?
You have to take risks just to get your business on it's feet (by leaving your full time job and investing some money and lots of unpaid time into your new venture). So I'd say you can't be in business without taking risks.
What do you love about OYE??
I love the way OYE sounds - it's has a cheeky personality, it's short and punchy.
I love Oye Modern because it makes me happy!
