TO BE CONTINUED is the theme of this comic book art exhibition. Instantaneous is an exhibition dedicated to comic book art and its creators. It’s about getting illustrations out of the sketchbook, out of zines and onto the wall to hang like a still from some movie you haven’t seen.
 
 
The idea is that Australian comic book artists take a frame from one of their beloved creations and put a little extra somin-somin in it, pretty-it-up, and hang it on a wall removed from the storyline – hence the name Instantaneous - Sequential Comic Book Art Out Of Context. What this does is make the viewer question what story lies behind the one or two sentences included in the framed picture.
 
Upon entry, guests are offered a program for $5, which puts the framed art hanging on the wall, in context with the frames of the comic on the page. The artworks are numbered but hung out of order. This encourages the viewer to tramp through the gallery hunting down the artwork that corresponds to the page in their program - or - flip the pages of their program to find the context of the art. Brilliant!!

These are pictures from the third Instantaneous exhibition held at the Grace Emily Hotel. It’s an event that happens every year on the first Tuesday after Free Comic Book Day. More than supporting the often forgotten comic book artists of Australia, the event also holds a charity auction at the end of the night, where every piece on the wall is put under the hammer for local men’s and women’s shelters. Pulp Fiction Comics, who organise the event, puts up a minimum bid of $20 for every piece. This balls-out generosity often encourages other people in the pub to discover their own philanthropic values. Beer is good for philanthropising also, and there’s plenty of that in a pub.
