A Word With Harris Robotis

Go to all the music festivals. Go to all of them and make a documentary and sell it for squillions to commercial TV– that’s our suggestion! However, if you’re not feeling as misanthropic as all that, perhaps the one to check out is the first-run Midsummer Circus festival, which local, too-cool-for-you club, Electric Circus is co-presenting with Fuzzy (Parklife, Field Days) at Morphetville Race Course. We’ve been intrigued by the artwork for this festival and its obviously low-rent aesthetic. Catching up with the creator of this poster (he also did the Stereosonic poster) Harris Robotis let us know he’s well aware of how many festivals are out there this summer but enjoys the challenge of creating unique themes and branding for these events anyway.

Art | Design | Music. Is there different motivations for pursuing all three? Do you want to achieve different things when you do your art as opposed to your music or does the experience intertwine?
I guess Im fortunate enough to mainly design for music and fashion related people. So whether its consciously or sub-conciously, my motivations and broad inspirations in music cross-blend into my design/artwork and vice versa. When I'm designing I often work along with a client on a notion or brief they may have but a lot of the time I am left with " Hey Harris here's the text...Go Nuts with the rest - do whatever you think?", which is great as it means my clients have total trust in what I do and makes my job feel like a hobby. There's never a day when I walk into the studio thinking ahh not work again.

What’s your attitude towards the-ever expanding list of Music Festivals over Summer?
There are a lot of festivals popping up around the country. Some of which have fantastic line ups and unique themes (eg. Midsummer Circus, Stereosonic and Parklife) and some which seem very unimaginative and predictable. Australia must really have a massive market for all the out door summer festivals as they just keep going on sale earlier and earlier every year. Soon we will be seeing tickets for events in 2011 selling out next week!

Who on the bill for Midsummer Circus are you really looking forward to seeing perform live?
Im really excited to see Proxy, Jackbeats and Technotronic live for the very first time. Jackbeats' Remix of Project Bassline has been my 2009 get me home free card when I DJ, so can't wait to see what their sets are like. I missed Proxy last time he was out but I've listened to a recording of Proxy live and also heard he smashed it to bits at his club show in Melbourne, so I can't wait to see him smash it in a festival environment. Technotronic is probably one of the most relevant dance acts to make a come back at an Aussie festival. They play a big influential role in the Nu-rave sound for many current producers and also will be the only ones who can get away with wearing fluro at the festival.

Midsummer Circus plays on January 10, 2010 at Morphetville Racecourse seel www.midsummercircus.com.au for more details.
