Indie group Box Elder are a fairly new, yet glorious arrival to the Adelaide scene. I spoke with the lads to get their take on all things musical...
Box Elder are… a 5 piece that play alternative noise based songs. We’ve been playing around Adelaide for the past year or so and are working on recording for an EP.
Our major musical influences include… bands like Joy Division and Deerhunter in terms of atmospherics, and also stuff like the Strokes, Pixies and John Frusciante. Our guitarist is fixated on Scandinavia, which has a pretty huge impact on the rest of us in one way or another.
The recording process is… pretty slow for us, we’ve been trying the whole home recording thing with limited results. We do a lot of live takes for personal use, but are trying to get more polished recordings finished.
Our 2010 plan is... well our Scandinavia-obsessed member seems to think that a move to Sweden is imminent. The rest of us are setting our goals a little more realistically and are hoping to record a series of EP’s, there’s a lot of songs that could really benefit from being ‘finished’.
At a Box Elder show, punters can expect… half an hour’s worth of part-harmonious, part-discordant noise, bells (but no whistles yet), additional snare drums, glockenspiels, a bit of instrument swapping and possibly a rowdy crowd member or two.
If our band was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, we’d be… the one with the stick (Donatello), no one ever says the one with the stick.
