Headed to Adelaide for the Cabaret Festival, the Axis of Awesome are one of Australia’s best comical-music oriented acts. We caught up with Axis member Lee Naimo (right) on the eve of their arrival to ADL.
Is this the Axis’ first time playing in Adelaide? Which world famous Adelaide landmark are you most looking forward to seeing? Yes this is our 1st time performing in Adelaide, we're looking forward to it. As for landmarks, I always look forward with great excitement to seeing the Rundle Mall pig statues.
What’s the musical background of the Axis? How do you go about assembling songs? Benny is a clasically trained musician, Jordan and I are big fans of guitar hero and we can play a lot of songs on expert. We'll usually sit around and write lyrics which will determine the musical style of the song, and Benny normally composes the music. But sometimes he or I will bring music to a writing session.
What can people expect from the Cabaret show? Musical comedy, comedic music and all things in between. It'll be a lot of new songs with a couple of trips down memory lane to some older material. Basically - good times.
Do you think there’s been a recent revival in musical comedy? Definitely, with the likes of Flight of the Conchords and Tim Minchin it's a great time for musical comedy. There are so many great up and coming musical comedy acts, it's exciting times.
If you were a doctor, how would you diagnose Australian comedy at the moment? Surprisingly healthy, if we're talking about the live scene. Both the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Sydney Comedy Festival had great turnouts this year, I think crowds were higher than last year at both festivals. I think the economic downturn can be a good thing for live comedy - performers put their prices down and people want to laugh more.
You’re listed on the Press Release as “way up back vocals” – explain! What animal cry would you compare your voice to? I am actually the 3rd best singer in the band, next year the guys have said I can have a microphone. As for an animal cry, it's most akin to a pig giving birth to a baby elephant, but deeper and more off-key.
If you had to live in an Axis of Evil country, which would you pick? America for sure.
The Axis of Awesome play 6-7 of June at the Banquet Room, Festival Centre. Tix $28 / $25 concession.
