I've organised my time better during the week purely so I can get in more movie watching. It's been worth it.
If there's one thing I can't stand it's phoney-baloney 80's nostalgia. C'mon, He-Man is bollocks. I will say this though: they sure don't make super-entertaining, clever, smartly written, dramatic, hilarious mainstream crowdpleasers like they used to.
This week I watched Red Dawn, a deadly serious piece of Cold War propaganda starring the late great Swayze. It's about teenagers fighting an invasion of Cubans and Russians! A real dicotomy of mind whilst watching it. Simultaniously a ham-fisted, uber-conservative relic and a genuinely heart-felt, gripping and startling piece of art. Check it out before the remake comes out all pussified early next year.
Also on my recommend list is Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Possibly a PERFECT film. Flat out chaos from start to end. It has an irreverence that I think the studios would consider dangerous now.
The Original Nightmare on Elm Street also pisses on most contemporary horro films. They're remaking that one too.
Oh, while I'm at it, go get your hands on the ORIGINAL Halloween. Goddamn if that isn't the scariest movie ever made.
Make time to watch movies, read books, listen to an album from start to finish. It's good for you.
