Born in 1802, Robert Gouger would one day grow to become the most overrated public servant in the history of governance. Following a brief stint in gaol, Gouger became colonial secretary of South Australia, where he brushed shoulders with a relative who’s who of South Australian folklore: Wakefield, Hindmarsh, Colonel Light; and they all hated Gouger’s guts. In one instance, Gouger fly-kicked Osmond Gilles in the head.
Furthermore, he was a terrible husband and father, with both his wife and infant son dying shortly after joining him in SA. Also, I’ll bet he never washed his hands after going to the men’s room. Fittingly, the street we named in his honour persistently reeks of piss. We’re proud to call him ours.
