You might think that Fringe and underground wrestling / nunchaku demonstrations don’t go together – but then you’d be wrong, foolish andfrankly a jerk for thinking so.Underground wrestling originated in Paris in the
19th century, and – in contrast to pro wrestling, which takes place in large venues – the underground wrestlers battle it out in small, intimate spaces where discipline is key. Among those appearing ringside is the mystery shogun of the Japanese underground himself, Fugofugo Yumeji. “I fight in a dark small hut having neither the showy clothes nor the illumination,” Fugofugo explains. “Why do you fight? Why do you live? Why do you bark? We want to find it in a fight.” All that, plus nunchaku world champion Hiroki will be there.

What makes it unique?
Aside from the fact that you won’t see underground Japanese wrestling at any other time in Adelaide, Fugofugo himself puts it best: “Traditional samurai entertainment jumped out of Japan. An act of God karate stick, technique and the fight of the soul.” Right on.
