FILM - Gunnin' For That #1 Spot

Beastie Boy MCA, aka Adam Yauch, is preparing to launch his film production company, Oscilloscope Laboratories, into the cut-throat movie business this June with his release GUNNIN’ FOR THAT #1 SPOT. The film takes a look at eight of the US' top high school basketball players as they are groomed for the limelight. The film promises to excite with the featured players lives, on and off, the court being mashed with raw hip-hop, jazz and break beats.

Following in the vein of Steve James’ Hoop Dreams (1994) Yauch’s take on the modern game promises to show just how intense the ride has become for youngsters hoping for a ticket in professional sport...

Five of the eight players featured in the movie (Michael Beasley-Kansas State, Kevin Love-UCLA, Kyle Singler-Duke, Donte Green-Syracuse, and Jerryd Bayless-University of Arizona) have since moved into the national spotlight playing for top NCAA basketball programs and have just finished March Madness. These ‘freshman phenoms’ are expected to make the crucial decision of whether to enter the NBA draft very soon. The other three players, still in high school (Brandon Jennings, Tyreke Evans, and Lance Stephenson) have fast become the top - and most dynamic - high school players in the nation.

Yauch says: “It was great to get the chance to meet these kids and work with them at such a young age. I’m looking forward to seeing how their careers unfold. I think it will be interesting to look back at this film 10 years from now to compare where they were headed, who they were, with where they’re at then.”

The movie has been selected to present its world premiere at the Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festivalat the end of April. We can only hope it makes it to Australian shores.
