CD | The Welcome Wagon | WELCOME TO THE WELCOME WAGON

Before I listened to this cd I knew I was going to hate it. Problem one: The Welcome Wagon is a cutesy wife and husband singing duo. Problem two: they’re super religious and all of the tracks on the album are about or addressed to God. Faith and I just don’t get along.

Then I listened to the album. And at some point during my forty-six minute folk-indie experience I had a spiritual awakening. Sufjan Stevens produced this album and of he ever starts a cult I will hand over my life savings without complaint. The religious singing duo can certainly hold a tune and write a layered folk song but I give Stevens full credit for shaping this album into an engaging, eccentric and enjoyable ramble. You can hear his style in the deep bass drums, tinkling harmonies and gentle off-tempo vocals which so effectively distracted me from the thematic content that I listened to the full length without once rolling my eyes.

Maybe just try and pretend it’s about anything other than god, unless you’re into that kind of thing. - Farrin
