DVD | The Reader

When a film this pointlessly boring comes along, normally frequent nudity and sex can continue to achieve viewer interest. The Reader has broken new ground my friends, it has managed to not only do the opposite, but also haunt me with constant nausea each time the scenes flash through my mind. A naked nineteen year old German boy reading novels to an aging, naked Kate Winslet by candle light for 90 minutes is a stomach turning visual disaster. If I was present during filming, security would have had me thrown off set for continually blowing out those cursed candles. There are no spoilers here, a young German boy, played by an up and coming David Kross, is helped out by an older German lady (Winslet), after which he promptly falls in love with her. Since Winslet’s cradle snatching character is illiterate, they form a strong bond through the books he reads her, and the gross love making that follows. Ralph Fiennes is in this film too, but his character as the older German boy is lifeless and has no chance of saving this tedious story.
