DVD | Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire was the film where Danny Boyle cemented his profile as a “good but not great” director. Sure, it’s got a heart-warming story that you might have seen during an Oscars recap – a young man goes on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in order to track down his childhood love. Sure, it’s got a photogenic backdrop (the slums of India) and cast (especially Freida Pinto, rwaor). The direction’s also not terrible, if you’re into cuts every five seconds.  But the underlying problem with the movie is that – well – it’s just all a little creepy. (Spoilers follow for those who haven’t seen the Oscar recap yet.) The problem is thus: How is Jamal (Dev Patel) meant to be a sympathetic romantic hero? He meets Latika (Pinto) when he’s a very young child, spends a couple of months with her – and then spends the rest of his life tracking her down for liaisons. Seriously, if Steve Buscemi were cast in the lead instead it would have been a thriller and retitled Stalkdog Outsideyourbathroominthebushes. Creepy.
