CD | Raph Boogie | LE BUMP

Raph Boogie - le bump, - crookneck

While some tracks are typical of what Australian hip-hop has become (exaggerated accents rapping about how tough it was growing up), most of this album is funky and energetic, and even a bit reminiscent of Jurassic 5. Raph Boogie’s extensive MC history is evident in the fast-paced track ‘Twister’. The quick-flying rhymes in this track are in stark contrast to the painfully awful lyrics of ‘Tea Cake’ however. These two tracks sum up Le Bump: an album full of contradictions. There’s emphasised Australian accents, soulful female crooning, 90s synth beats and harmonised choruses. One wonders whether Raph Boogie’s name was decided upon because of the nature of his music. It is a serious challenge to remain still throughout this album – the first 10 seconds of the album alone will get stuck in your head and force your feet to move. If only more Australian hip-hop sounded like Raph Boogie there’d be more fans than cringers, and that’s without even mentioning the giant novelty phone and pencil on his album cover.
