CD | Julian Casablancas | PHRAZES FOR THE YOUNG

Oh, that tragic New York scene which dazzled us ever so briefly in a time that feels like ages ago now. And even though people stopped listening as abruptly as the movement began, no one bothered to tell the Strokes. They’ve been banging out similar sounding music for nearly a decade, and they believe in it so much that the lead singer decided to release his own similar sounding album.

Well, for the most part anyway. Casablancas captures the sound of the Strokes and gives it a bit of a folky, sometimes electro feel. Of the eight tracks there are four that hit the mark, while the other four are either boring or rubbish. ‘11th Dimension’ is the easy standout on the album – sounding just like a Strokes Vs MGMT party child on a bender – while the final 2 tracks, ‘Glass’ and ‘Tourist’, sound like a possum rubbing its face on a cheese grater.

Undeniably though, if you were never
a Strokes fan or don’t really care for them anymore, this is not the album
for you.  - Doug
