CD | Mum Smokes | EASY/HOUSE MUSIC

I have to confess: I pretty much bought this CD by band name alone. And the title Easy/House Music allayed my fear that such an awesome name might be wasted on some horrific punk/emo nightmare. As a double album sold at the same price as a single, you could even call it something as awful as a “recession buster”. But I’ll call it a “concept album”. Easy/House Music boasts some moments that are well put together, however others sound like demos rescued from under the passenger seat of their manager’s car (although less so on House Music than Easy).  But there are certain to be many followers of Mum Smokes.  These are most likely to be 18 – 24 year old girls who wear vintage dresses, brooches, opaque tights, flat shoes and red lipstick, quietly standing in a corner of a sticky floored dive trying to catch the lead singer’s eye with a seductive gaze.  This image sums up Mum Smokes, which means two things. 1) I kinda dig where they’re going even though their Brunswick-Street-chic pisses me off; and 2) they’ll probably be huge by the release of their next album when they have a better distributor.
