All I remember of the 80s is sneaking into the lounge every morning to watch Dungeons and Dragons, Thundercats and He-Man. On the other hand, twenty years ago Low Budget’s Melbourne boys DJ Debonair and MC Gentleman Gene must have been listening intently to their record players spinning the likes of Herbie Hancock, Bootsy Collins and Curtis Mayfield. Laserdisc is the result of this musical education - a funky hip-hop journey through fat disco bass lines, digital synths and the electronic drum machines of the 80s.
The supreme production by DJ Debonair will definitely make your head bop from start to finish - or even pop and lock your way to the dancefloor. Lyricly Laserdisc doesn’t always hit the same heights of the production, but Gentleman Gene puts it best with the line “most of the times my rhymes ain’t sayin shit / more bout how you sayin it and convey it in a way they can relate to it”. Laserdisc is about as fresh and vibrant as Aussie hip-hop can get.- Tom
