CD | Leader Cheetah | THE SUNSPOT LETTERS

There were a great many mutterings about Neil Young and cloning when Leader Cheetah’s debut hit stores. I’ve never listened to a single Neil Young album, so I’m not qualified to comment. I have listened to this album though; about six thousand times - because it’s one of those collections of songs which transforms to suit you. Whether you’re feeling sad, ecstatic, hungover, mad, or anything else beyond my limited emotional range, The Sunspot Letters is going to help you work through it. So you want to put it on all the time. It’s just got so many goddamn layers. There are these ridiculously intricate instrumental bridges which are so detailed and well crafted that it blows my mind. And the boys manage to lovingly maintain a nice balance between storytelling, imagery and irony in their lyrics. Someone worked very hard on making these songs as deep and harmonious as they are and I’m grateful to them.

It would be stupid not to mention the resounding country twang and heavy folk influence here. Be warned but don’t be wary. Country-indie is on its way.
