If you ever need to remember not to judge a book by its cover, it’s when you’re judging this EP. Three girls in trackies, one sticking her tongue between spread fingers, adorn the cover of The Hackham Crew EP, and other than giving Jimmy & The Mirrors their EP’s name and cover art they are completely irrelevant to this band.
This EP is surprisingly good for a CD that was literally labelled with a permanent texta. The tunes are nice indie rock tracks with an obvious Nick Cave influence. This Cave-ness is so pervasive though that the vocals often come across more as comical mimicry than allusion. ‘Cinderella’ breaks this tendency with beautiful harmonies and painful harmonica, while ‘Susie’ and ‘The End’ are dance-y enough for the slight annoyance of the vocals not to matter.
Hopefully the input of producer Matt Hills will see Jimmy & The Mirrors follow a similar path of success to other local Hill projects Wolf & Cub and Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire!
