Hot Chip missed Adelaide last time they were on the Big Day Out circuit. After the release of their third studio album however, they were back, and this time our Adelaide Showgrounds was on the itinerary. We at Merge wanted to take a few minutes to remind everyone how awesome their most recent album is. Made in the Dark is an all occasion party album that somehow you can also relax to. Think fairy bread, fine cheese and a keg of beer.
‘Shake a Fist’ was the first single, and it’s an absolute treasure. Heavy bass, heavy drums and some great backup vocals all steadily build and explode into a chaotic, electro wet dream. Take a handful of Stillnox for this one and imagine Tricky and Goldie having a domestic dispute. Once your breath returns, ‘Ready for the Floor’ will take you on a pleasant walk to the markets. It deservedly begs for some Vitamin D, and perhaps a skip down the mall.
Despite the impressive start, this album really begins to show it’s brilliance from track 5. ‘We’re looking for a Lot of Love’ and ‘Made in the Dark’ will put you in the mood for some heated romance, transforming even the most awkward performance into a memorable one. ‘Touch too much’ and ‘one pure thought’ are the stand outs. These are the tracks that will leave you hanging for the next album while you wait patiently at the merch stand for your very own Hot Chip t-shirt.
The live anthem will clearly be ‘Hold On’. Learn the lyrics, this track got everybody singing and going mental at the Big Day out this year.
