CD - Firekites: THE BOWERY

This may just be the most beautiful Australian album of 2008. Sounds like I’m making wild, sweeping statements right? Probably read about this band in some ‘Top Ten To Watch’ list, huh? Unfortunately, smarty pants, the Firekites’ publicity is as gentle and understated as their music. Discovering the Firekites was like finding a preloved cardigan in an op shop. Quirky but beautiful, with an effortlessness and familiarity that never fails to make you sigh and think everything will be ok.

‘Same Suburb Different Park’ is slightly more up tempo than some of the more orchestrally based tracks on this album, yet still richly textured. Special note must also be made of Jane Tyrrell’s haunting guest vocals. As a band,
the Firekites have a rare ability to seamlessly mesh each instrument and lyric together in a style not dissimilar to past indie folk touring mates Iron and Wine, or others such as Low and Bon Iver. Intimate, reassuring and gentle. A stunning collection of songs to curl up to. - Red Paint
