I admit, it was with some sort of trepidation and fear that I ventured to the Adelaide Festival Theatre for a night of "contemporary ballet". However, in hindsight, I think I was confusing this combination of artsy words with that other, more frightening knockout combo: "interpretive dance". While there were definitely elements of the modern in the Complexions performance, from the time the curtain was raised on a packed house at the Festival Theatre, the performance was eye-poppingly spectacular. Discipline and flair were combined as some of the most attractive human beings I've ever seen, flung their limbs around in the most controlled and fantastic movements… I've ever seen. Of course there were more than a few times when I cringed at the thought of how much pain I would be in if I attempted the moves being performed on stage but overarchingly the spirit of the performance was so captivating that you did feel like getting up and dancing with them. The Complexions performance was a perfect execution of a beautiful and traditional art form, exactly as supurfluous as it has always been, simply remastered and interpreted for the modern times. The last segment, devoted to U2 music - did kill me just a little bit. Not for the dancing so much as the fact that you'll leave the cinema prancing down the street singing "it's a beautiful day..." gross.
