Anyone who knows any history about BJM knows they have had their fair damn share of sensationalized “ups and downs.” Most of us have seen the DVD “Dig” which documents the developing careers and friendships between BJM and The Dandy Warhols. (And if you haven’ t seen it, stop reading this and go watch it. NOW!) You’ll be amazed that they are still a band).
Who Killed Sergeant Pepper? is the new baby of BJM leader Anton Newcomb. Straying far from their familiar style, it boasts hypno-dance beats and the vocal style Newcome adopts at times bears similarities to a Happy Mondays record. It’s not as shoegaze/rock inspired as previous albums but instead a mix between repetitive ambience and upbeat dancefloor songs. It’s almost hard to believe they are even they same band who recorded Tepid Peppermint Wonderland.
Just the memory of their glory days makes the album a tad disheartening. In a world where everyone and everything is turning soulless/mind numbing/dance anthem/drum machine crazy, it’d be nice to have someone say fuck you to the gravy train that is electro. I guess Anton thought otherwise. - Phoenix
