Some friends and I made a last minute decision not to see the beautifully harrowing Spanish film that we had planned to. It was a particularly dreary day and seemingly preferred a laugh rather than spending two hours challenging death and religion. After seeing Dylan Moran in April, I was psyched about taking in some more Irish culture. In hindsight, I should have probably just grabbed myself a Guinness. The plot relies mainly on the element of surprise; it’s basically a story of bad luck and accidents. Mark (Mark Doherty) and Pierce (Dylan Moran), are a couple of drunks with no prospects; relying on the success of their unwritten screenplay to catapult them from their misery. The acting and dialogue are great, the bleakness is non stop, all the while remaining firmly on its black comedy path throughout. The challenges overcome by the characters are realistic, and the film poses many questions of morale, and “what would you do?” type scenarios. Go see the Spanish film instead though, wait for this one in the rentals. There just aren’t enough laughs or story for the cinema.
